MISSION STATEMENT

The Field, founded in New York in 1986, is an artist support and service organization that provides workshops, performances, and other programs for independent performing artists in twelve cities across the country. The underlying foundation of The Field is a commitment to serve all artists, from those making their first work, to those who are experienced, supported and recognized, as well as artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and aesthetic points of view. To this end, The Field does not engage in any curatorial activity, maintaining an open, non-exclusive forum which any artist can join.

ROOTS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO FIELD

Maxine Moerman brought The Field to San Francisco in the fall of 1995, and has since held many Fieldwork sessions and performances. Due to the success of these sessions, and the increased demand for more Field programs, Ms. Moerman has established an advisory board to assist in the planning and implementation of future Field projects. The Field's San Francisco site offers Guest Artist workshops for dancer/choreographers and theater artists in addition to mixed discipline Fieldwork sessions.

FIELD FORWARD NETWORK

The Field Forward Network is a consortium of artists, administrators, and organizations in 12 North American cities and Tokyo, Japan. The Network's mission is to create a community of independent performing artists and facilitate communication among the Network sites.

Initiated by The Field NY in 1992, the Network offers sites a way to connect with artists and organizations across the country. At the same time, the Network supports local integrity and autonomy, allowing each site to tailor program offerings to best meet its specific needs.

Currently the Field Forward Network includes satellite sites in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Washington DC. In 1998 we also initiated our first international site in Tokyo, Japan. Each offers The Fields core workshop, Fieldwork, which helps artists get feedback and support on their developing artwork. Several sites also present Fielday, festivals of short dance, music, performance art and theater works.

An annual conference held at the New York office and touring partnerships among several Network sites keep artists connected, helping them develop projects like alternative touring structures and residency exchange programs. Additionally our Gone With The Field Guide lists resources in over 30 cities across North America, and our newest program-in-the-works, Go Tour, enable artists to book their own tours.
